The Free State police in Welkom are investigating a case of kidnapping and hijacking involving a pensioner who was kidnapped from his home and kept in a shack for days.
Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says the 70-year-old was asleep at his home in Reitzpark when two men wearing balaclavas forced entry into his house. The two assailants then kidnapped him and also took a plasma-screen television while driving off with his vehicle to a secluded place where he was kept from Monday to Thursday.
Thakeng says the suspects assaulted the pensioner, demanding his bank card pin. They afterwards withdrew an undisclosed amount of cash and kept him inside a shack and drove off with his vehicle. Thakeng says the pensioner was released and then admitted to an Intensive Care Unit at a Welkom hospital.
“They forced him out of his house and drove off with him inside his car. The daughter was informed about her father when he was in the hospital. A case of car-jacking and kidnapping has been registered for further investigation,” he adds.
Should anyone have information leading to the arrests of these suspects, Detective Captain Pieter du Plessis of the Welkom Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit can be contacted at 079 884 2179
