Local Woman busted with stolen copper cable and municipal property

A woman (31) was arrested after being found in possession of suspected stolen copper cable as well as other property belonging to the Matjhabeng Municipality.

Cable theft in Matjhabeng has become a highly serious crime, with criminals targeting areas such as Odendaalsrus, Virginia, Welkom and Bronville. Copper cable worth millions of rands has already been stolen in these areas resulting in residents being left without electricity.

After receiving a tip-off about a person who is in possession of copper cable at one of the shacks in Phomolong Village, members of the SAPS’ POP Reaction Task Team investigated. “Upon arrival, they found a 31 year old woman in possession of 5 pallets of clear view fence, 5 fence poles, a roll of copper wire weighing 20,5 kg, 2 grinders, 1 drill machine and a 23 m long electric cord,” said police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng.

“All confiscated property was identified by Matjhabeng municipality as theirs. We would like to warn copper cable thieves to refrain from stealing copper cable from the municipality as we won’t rest until they are arrested and removed from the streets so Matjhabeng can become safe,” he added.
